Ingredients

Units Scale

Bread

  • 1 loaf Italian bread
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick / 113 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup (50 g) parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 pound ground beef
  • 2 cups (514 g) marinara sauce, divided

Topping

  • 1 cup (113 g) mozzarella cheese, shredded, divided
  • 1 cup (113 g) sharp cheddar cheese, shredded, divided
  • parsley, chopped for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. Slice Bread: Cut the loaf of Italian bread lengthwise into two halves and place them cut side up onto the prepared baking sheet.
  3. Prepare Butter Mixture: In a small bowl, mix softened butter with grated parmesan cheese, garlic salt, and Italian seasoning. Spread this mixture evenly over the cut sides of the bread halves and set aside.
  4. Cook Ground Beef: Heat a large skillet over medium heat, add ground beef and cook while breaking it up with a spatula until browned and fully cooked, about 7 minutes. Drain any excess grease.
  5. Simmer Marinara: Reduce the heat to low, stir in 1 cup of marinara sauce with the cooked beef, and simmer for 3 minutes until heated through. Remove from heat.
  6. Assemble Bread: Spread half of the beef and marinara mixture onto each bread half. Sprinkle ½ cup mozzarella and ½ cup sharp cheddar over each.
  7. Bake Bread: Bake in the preheated oven for 14 minutes or until the bread is toasted and cheese is melted.
  8. Broil for Finish: Turn the oven to broil, broil the bread for 3 minutes watching carefully until the cheese turns golden brown.
  9. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle chopped parsley over the top, cut into pieces, and serve immediately with the remaining 1 cup marinara sauce as a dipping sauce.

Notes

  • For air fryer instructions, place bread into the air fryer basket and air fry at 350°F for 5 minutes until cheese is melted and golden.
  • Using fresh herbs like parsley adds a nice freshness to the rich flavors.
  • You can substitute ground beef with ground turkey for a leaner option.
  • Allow the bread to cool slightly before cutting to prevent the cheese from sliding off.
  • If you prefer a spicier option, add crushed red pepper flakes to the meat mixture.
